Before you get your approval to run the service on a signal box, you need to find out about the local characteristics. After training as a general trainee signalman, dispatchers were always paired with a person skilled in the signal box. This chapter is the brief introduction to the area. Read it carefully. It contains very important information.

The text is "peer to peer" written as if you are in the signal box, the first day after training.

Have a more detailed look at the Sp Dr S 60-Stellwerk Mathilde panel here.

Introduction

Welcome to Streckenzentralstellwerk Mathilde. Let's have a more detailed look on our panel.

The PSB Mathilde is responsible for dispatching the freight train traffic in the area of the western Ruhr between Bottrop, Essen-Altenessen, Oberhausen-Osterfeld Süd, Oberhausen Hbf, Duisburg Wedau, Duisburg Hochfeld, Duisburg Hbf, Duisburg Ruhrort-Hafen and Moers safely and efficiently.

The PSB is operated 24 hours per day. Each shift at PSB Malthide (Maf) consists of four employees. Two of them are the actual dispatchers controlling the railway traffic in their dispatching area. The others are a "train announcer" and an assistant-dispatcher. The assistant dispatcher will travel to the remotely controlled PSB of either PSB Fri, PSB Abzw. Sigle or PSB Bf (Duisburg-Beeck) to operate it from there in case remote controlling fails or local system failure. The "train announcer" operates the communication systems, and is taking care of telephone calls with the neighboring dispatchers as well as announcing the trains to them in case the ZNP801 system fails.

PSB Mathilde (Maf) controls three PSB's remotely : PSB Essen-Frintrop (Fri) located nearby Abzw. Essen-Dellwig, PSB Sigle near Abzw. Sigle and PSB Duisburg-Beeck (Bf). These areas are shown on the panel as dark grey tiles.

Peculiarities in the dispatching area of PSB Mathilde

Abzw. Essen-Horl (EEHR)

Abzw. Essen-Horl

At the top left track 872 leads towards Essen-Bergeborbeck (EEBE). This is line 2241, and has been taken out of service and can not be used! Directly below we have track 802 (line 2253) towards Essen-Vogelheim (EEVL). Dispatcher Wt is our neighbouring dispatcher over there. Normally trains are offered and accepted via ZNP. Field A870 is used for offering trains on track 802. Line 2253 continues towards Oberhausen-Osterfeld Süd (EOS) via track 885 (offering trains is done in field A883). There we communicate with dispatcher Swo. The existing overhead line in this direction is switched off and earthed. In the past there used to be a connection with Abzw. Prosper-Levin (EPRL) via switch 824. The tracks there have been removed a long time ago. Switches 824 and 826 are locked due to the track closures. The signals do not have auto fleeting here, so you will always have to operate them yourself. However, there isn't much going in this area.

  • Track 872 towards Essen-Bergeborbeck is out of order. You may not send trains there!
  • A870 is the field for offering trains on track 802.
  • Track 885 leads to Oberhausen-Osterfeld Süd. Trains will come back into our dispatching area via track 272/273.
  • Switches 824 and 826 are locked.
  • No auto fleeting available.
  • Remotely controlled dispatching area of PSB Fri.

Abzw. Gerschede (EGED) with connection to Klöckner (EKKR)

Abzw. Gerschede with Awanst Klöckner

Abzw. Gerschede

Tracks 748/749 on the left are part of line 2243 towards Bottrop Süd (EBTS). Our colleague there works at PSB Bsf. Train from EBTS are announce in train window V746. Track 749 leads towards Bottrop Süd, track 748 is the track into our direction. Line 2242, indicated as track 758, towards Bottrop Hbf (EBTH) also branches off at this junction. Normally we offer our trains for EBTH in field A754 using ZNP. Heavy trains should get an unobstructed passage through Abzw. Gerschede as well as Prosper-Levin!! Such trains are announced by dispatcher Bsf (EBTS) in field A744.

Awanst Klöckner

Signal 748 will show the Hp2 Zs3 "3"-aspect for routes towards the connection with Klöckner. This connection can be reached via track 799. The company Klöckner is a commodities trader which is supplied by train from time to time. Trains, including out of gauge trains, towards Klöckner do not have to be offered to the supervisor over there. The driver of a train departing from here will call us when once he has stopped his train in front of Signal 799. Almost everything runs in auto fleeting, except for the trains towards Bottrop Hbf and the connection towards Klöckner.

  • Signal 749 is a low-positioned main signal showing only the Hp0 or Zs8 aspect.
  • Signal 768 is a low-positioned main signal showing only the Hp0 or Zs1 aspect.
  • No auto fleeting towards Klöckner and EBTH.
  • A754 (BOF) is for offering trains on track 758.
  • A744 (BSF) is for offering trains from Bsf on track 748, for those heavy trains which require an unobstructed passage through Abzw. Gerschede as well as Prosper-Levin!!
  • V746 is the train announcement window for trains expected to arrive on track 758.
  • Track 799 is the connection to "Klöckner".

Abzw. Prosper-Levin (EPRL)

Abzw. Prosper-Levin (EPRL)

Let's have a look at Abzweig Prosper-Levin now. There is a short anecdote about this junction. If you look closely, you will notice that "Prosper-Lewin" is shown on the panel. That's misspelled from the beginning. Someone must have made this mistake whilst the panel was being assembled, and nobody noticed that error back then. Lines 2243 and 2244 split at this junction. Line 2243 is the upper line, with tracks 668 and 765 towards Abzweig Essen-Dellwig. Line 2244 goes straight into the direction of Abzw. Essen-Frintrop Fbn (Walzwerkstrecke). Auto fleeting is available for all directions. You must pay attention to track 765. That track is very short, so it can happen that trains, being stopped at signal 765, block a train route from 672 to 664. Additionally, sometimes very heavy trains pass through here. Such trains may not be halted at any signal at Abzw. Prosper-Levin. So, make sure that you have ensured a clear passage for such trains.

  • Signals X628, X668 and X767 are low-positioned main signals which can only show Hp0 and Zs8
  • Auto fleeting available for all directions
  • Very heavy trains should have a clear passage here.
  • Tracks 765 and 668 are very short (300 m)! Make sure that you are not 'locking' things there!
  • Note: on the panel "Prosper-Lewin" is shown. Apparently they made an error when assembling the panel, as it should have been "Levin".

Abzw. Essen-Dellwig (EEDL)

Abzw. Essen-Dellwig

Abzw. Essen-Dellwig is located directly next to Abzw. Prosper-Levin. Here the double track line 2243 joins line 2277, which is a single track line into the direction of Essen-Bergeborbeck (EEBE), and a double track line into the direction Oberhausen Hbf (EOB). The neighbouring PSB is located at the station of Essen-Bergeborbeck, which is remote controlled by the dispatcher Eaf (Essen-Altenessen (EEAL) ). Track 696 is leading towards Essen-Bergeborbeck. Trains for that direction are offered in field A697. You could also send the trains into that direction via track 652. However, this is a "emergencey train route" which we do not use that often, as this route goes via the passenger tracks (indicated as tracks 678/679). Setting a route to/from track 652 is set as a partial route. The other part of the route setting is done by the dispatcher Ohf (Oberhausen Hbf). In the event that you have to send trains to EEAL via 652, you have to offer the trains to dispatcher Ohf using the field A653.

The Abzw. Essen-Dellwig run pretty well with auto fleeting activated. We only have to set the routes ourselves for the trains towards EEBE, as we have to offer the trains into that direction first.

Here at Abzw. Dellwig we can also see some remains of tracks from better times. Track 638 used to lead towards the station of Essen-Frintrop, which does not exist anymore. De switches 641, 642 and 643 used to be part of the connection towards "Gute Hoffnungs-Hütte". Tracks have been removed there as well, and these switches are permanently locked since then.

  • Signal X662 is a low-positioned main signal which can only show Hp0 and Zs8.
  • Signal X664 and X765 are low-positioned main signals which can only show Hp0, Zs1 and Zs8.
  • Signal X665 is a low-positioned main signal which shows Hp0 constantly.
  • A697 (EAL) is for offering trains on track 696.
  • A653 (EAL) is for offering trains on track 652.
  • No auto fleeting for train routes towards EEBE.
  • You may send trains towards Essen-Altenessen via the Passenger tracks (via track 652) instead of via 672->696.
  • Remotely controlled dispatching area of PSB Fri

Abzw. Essen-Frintrop Fbn (EEFR)

Abzw. Essen-Frintrop Fbn

Along the Walzwerkstrecke (Walzwerk line) there used to be Abzweig Essen-Frintrop Fbn. From there trains could be send to the formerly very imporant freight yard of Essen-Frintrop, as well as towards Essen-West. Both the freight yard and the junction are totally removed. However, it is still considered to be a specific location in our dispatching area, as this is the point where line 2280 changes over into line 2244.

Here we also find the only two level crossings in our dispatching area. They are remotely monitored level crossings (Fü). The state of the level crossing is reported to the signal box and can be seen on the panel. The dispatcher must react only in case of failures.

Abzw. Obo (EOB O) / Anschluss Oberhausen Hütte (EHOA)

Abzw. Obo / Anschluss Oberhausen Hütte

Abzw. Obo

Abzweig Obo has this strange name as it is part of the station Oberhausen Hbf. This junction used to be controlled from PSB Oberhausen Ost (Short name "Obo"). Today, we are responsible for this junction. The track 562/563 belong to line 2277, which starts here. Tracks 462/561 lead to Abzw. Oro (line 2278). Track 571 is line 2282 to/from Abzw. Obn, which is also part of Oberhausen Hbf, but controlled by the dispatcher Ohf (Oberhausen Hbf). Field A574 is for offering trains on that track. Tracks 560 and 565 also lead to Oberhausen Hbf. There is no open line there, they are partial routes with dispatcher Ohf. Still trains have to be offered there as well (A566 and A567). Track 565 (A567) in Oberhausen Hbf is very short. Therefor only single locs should be send over that track.

Anschluss Oberhausen Hütte

The connection "Oberhausen Hütte" is directly next to Abzw. Obo. These are the tracks 501 upto 505. Track 572 with group exit signal R501-504 is located between the switches 512 and 513. The whole connection has been taken out of order, and therefor all tracks and signals are locked. No trains may be send there as nobody knows how things are there now!

  • signals 561, 562 and 571 are entry signals of Oberhausen Hbf (track 560 and 565) in case of train routes towards EOB.
  • The train route towards 565 ends at a terminal track. Signals 561 and 571 will always show aspect Hp2 Zs3 "3" for this train route.
  • Signal BkSig 562 may only be operated for train routes towards EOBR (421/422) when the dispatcher Oro has accepted the train.
  • Auto fleeting is available for all signals into the directions of Abzw. Oro and Abzw. Essen-Dellwig.
  • Field A566 (OHF) is used for offering trains on track 560
  • Field A567 (OHF) is used for offering trains on track 565
  • Field A574 (OHF) is used for offering trains on track 571
  • Tracks 501, 502, 503, 504, 505 are permanently out of order / earthed. (towards "Gute Hoffnungs-Hütte")
  • Track 565 is very short in length (50 M). This track is only used to exchange locs between Maf and Oberhausen.
  • Tracks 565 and 560 is in fact a scissors crossing. The other half of this crossing is controlled by Oberhausen Hbf.
  • Track 562: Auto fleeting at signal 562 for trains with Steering number 1 (towards Oberhausen-West track 421) does not work here.
  • There is a little slope upwards at signal 462. Heavy trains can not will not be able to start up from stand-still here. So, only operate 562 when the entry towards track 421 is not occupied.
  • For orientation : Track 663 is the same as track 563, track 662 is the same as 562.

Abzw. Oro (EOBRB)

Abzw. Oro

The Abzweig Oro is also controlled from two PSB's. One part is under control of Oberhausen West (Oro). We are responsible for the southern part of this junction. Here line 2283 (track 418, offering field A419), coming from Oberhausen Hbf, joins the lines 2278 (from Obo towards Oberhausen West) and 2321 (from here onwards to Duisburg-Wedau). Towards Hbf is an open line section, but to and from Oberhausen West we have partial routes. All trains (except signle locs) must be offered. Trains towards EOBR can be send via track 421 or 422, trains from EOBR are send via track 422 or 423. As soon as our nieghbour Oro sets a (partial) exit route towards us, the corresponding announcement train window (V422 or V423) will show the train number, so that we can decide where the train needs to go to. In case of routes towards Oberhausen West, the signals 418 and 462 function as entry signals for that yard. As there is a pretty steep slope nearby signal 462 you must make sure that the train gets an unhindered passage. If you can not ensure this, should let the train stop at signal 562!

  • Signals 418 and 462 are entry signal for Oberhausen West in case of train routes towards EOBR (411/412)
  • Ensure unhindered passage at signal 462!
  • Auto fleeting for signal 461 (towards Obo) and 462 (except towards EOBR)
  • A419 (OHF)is the field for offering trains on track 418.
  • Signal Ls 421 always shows the Sh 0 aspect.
  • Oberhausen-West Stellwerk Oro accepts trains on both tracks 422 and 421. 421 is standard.
  • Tracks 421 and 423 are considered to be a double track line!
  • Track 422 is bi-directional track. Train number window A424 is used for offering trains on track 422.
  • Track 480 is a very short track for running around.

Abzw. Walzwerk (EWAZ)

Abzw. Walzwerk

Abzweig Walzwerk is displayed on our panel directly under the Abzweig Oro. Here the two lines from Oberhausen West meet with lines from Abzweig Mathilde. The line 2327 (tracks 271/172) from Duisburg-Ruhrort Hafen and line 2331 (track 213/114) from Meiderich Süd are coming out of the direction of Abzweig Mathilde. From Oberhausen West we have the line 2280 (EOBR - Abzw. Essen-Frintrop Fbn) and line 2320 (Duisburg Hbf - Oberhausen-Osterfeld Süd). Here we also have two neighbouring dispatchers. The first one is dispatcher Ost of the signal box Oberhausen-Osterfeld Süd (EOS) for the tracks 273/272. Upcoming trains are shown in the announcement train window V274, as soon as the dispatcher Ost sets an exit route towards track 272. Four tracks connect us with dispatching area of Oro (Oberhausen West). 291 and 281 are from there, the tracks 292/282 are leading towards there. Those tracks are a real open line. Normally we have Abzweig Walzwerk running in auto fleeting mode, so taht we hardly have to do anything here. Only exception is signal 271. Routes towards Abzw. Osterfeld have to be set ourselves.

  • Auto fleeting for all signals, except for sig 271 towards EOFE.
  • Signals Ls 273 and 313 always show the Sh 0 aspect.
  • Here you will note how many trains are on their way between Oberhausen-West and Oberhausen Osterfeld-Süd.
  • For orientation: Track 623 is the same one as 323, track is the same one as 314.

Abzw. Osterfeld (EOFE)

Abzw. Osterfeld

Left of Abzw. Walzwerk we have Abzw. Osterfeld. There isn't much going on there. The non-electrified line towards Bottrop-Nord (EBTN) branches off here. There, only the connection to Pilkington Glasfabriken (EBTND) is serviced by some trains. As soon as a train enters this track you must secure the track by placing danger collars, as there may only be one train on this section at any time. The driver of a train departing from here will call us when once he has stopped his train in front of Signal 392. You can only remove the danger collars again after the train has left track 392. All signals on the Walzwerk line are normally in auto fleeting mode.

  • Auto fleeting available for signals BkSig 313 towards Essen-Frintrop and BkSig 314
  • Route setting towards 392 to be set with FfrT group button, as this is a non-electrified track.

Abzw. Mathilde (EMAF)

Abzw. Mathilde

Now we get to "our" Abzweig. Here three line are running parallel. The line 2321, out of the direction of Duisburg-Wedau (112/113) and heading towards Abzw. Oro (162/461), the line 2327 fron Duisburg-Ruhrort Hafen (171) towards Abzw. Walzwerk (172/271) as well as line from Moers (via tracks 160/161) onwards to Abzweig Walzwerk (114/213). All tracks are electrified. Here everything runs automatically, except for routes towards Ruhrort Hafen (track 171). There it goes on towards Fdl Bt, trains to there have to be offered in A173.

  • Auto fleeting available for all signals, excpet into the direction of EDRH.
  • Signal Ls 160 always shows the Sh 0 aspect.
  • The Station Button for Maf is located above switch 140. You need this one to be able to set auxiliary signal aspects.
  • A173 (RHF) is used for offering train on track 171 (to/from Duisburg Ruhrort Hafen)

Abzw. Ruhrtal (ERTL)

Abzw. Ruhrtal

From Mathilde the line 2321 continues towards Abzw. Ruhrtal and joins with line 2320, which is coming from Oberhausen West (EOBR) and leads towards Duisburg Hbf (EDU). Additionally, the line 2307 from Duisburg-Ruhrort Hafen (EDRH) connects here as well. The last is an electrified single track line. Trains from there are offered by dispacther Bt via A156. Trains to and from EOBR do not have to be offered in normal operations. You can route the trains over the 4-track line between Abzw. Ruhrtal and Abzw. Lotharstraße as per your own preferences. But be careful with trains to the west (right) with steering number 8 and 9: those trains need to bend routed via track 130 towards Abzw. Sigle. The 4-track line is numbered with roman numbers from top to bottom for a better overview.

  • A156 (RHF) is used for offering train on track 154 (to/from Duisburg Ruhrort Hafen)
  • Auto fleeting available for all signals except for signal 154.
  • No auto fleeting towards EDRH.
  • Signal Ls 111 always shows the Sh 0 aspect.
  • Track 109/009 ->> I
    Track 106/006 ->> II
    Track 137/037 ->> III
    Track 136/036 ->> IV
  • You can route the trains over this 4-track line just as you like.

Abzw. Sigle (ESI)

Abzw. Sigle

Next junction is Abzw. Sigle. The power signal box (Si) located there is normally operated from here. This junction includes the central block signals 005 and 006 along line 2321, as well as the actual branches towards Duisburg Hafen (EDHA) track 051 of line 2316, and line 2320 towards Abzw. Duissern (EDUI) (track 042). Trains for Duisburg Hafen (051) must be offered by telephone, as the railnetwork in the harbor is operated by a private operator. Trains into the direction of Duisburg Hbf, via Abzw. Duissern (Gleis 042), are offered to the neighbouring dispatcher Dhf in field A043.

  • Auto fleeting available for all signals, except for the directions EDU und EDHD.
  • A043 (DHF) is used for offering train on track 042 (to/from Duisburg Hbf).
  • Trains towards Duisburg-Hafen (051) must be offered to Dhf by telephone.
  • Route setting towards 051 to be set with FfrT group button, as this is a non-electrified track.
  • Remotely controlled dispatching area of PSB Si.

Abzw. Lotharstraße (ELOT)

Abzw. Lotharstraße

The 4-track line "ends" at Abzweig Lotharstraße. Here the two electrified double track lines split. The line 2321 connects us with Duisburg-Wedau vai tracks 002/003. The dispatcher Wnt is responsible over there. Line 2323 leads to Duisburg-Hochfeld Süd (EDHD) via tracks 030/301. There dispatcher Hd is responsible. WE hardly have to do anything here, as everything is running in auto fleeting mode.

  • Auto fleeting available for all signals,
  • Remotely controlled dispatching area of PSB Si.

Abzw. Meiderich Ost (EDMO)

Abzw. Meiderich Ost

Here we see Abzweig Meiderich Ost. It is located along the line 2331 from/to Moers (KMO). The single track line 2304 towards Oberhausen West (EOBR) branches off here. Train heading for that destination are offered to dispatcher Orw via field A188. A route towards there is a partial route shared with PSB Orw. Signal 185 acts as entry signal in case the route is set towards Oberhausen West. Track 197 is not a line, but part of a switch connection with line 2274 (Oberhausen Hbf - Duisburg-Ruhrort). Trains can be routed towards Oberhausen Hbf (EOB) via this connection. A route out of the direction of Oberhausen Hbf is not possible here. Trains for this route are to be offered to dispatcher Ohf. Between switch 194 and 195 we a stand alone signal Zs6 for routes towards Abzw. Meiderich Süd. In case the start signal of route towards track 188 does not go to clear, then check the state of this Zs6 signal, as that might be the cause. The train window number 185 should actually be located on the right of signal 185, but there was no place for it when the panel was being assembled. Pay attention to train movements towards track 191 (Duisburg-Ruhrort), as Abzw. Meiderich Süd can only be reached via track 188.

  • Stand alone signal Zs6
  • A188 (ORW) is used for offering train on track 186.
  • Trains towards Oberhausen Hbf (197) must be offered to Ohf by telephone.
  • Auto fleeting available at signal 185 towards EMAF and signal 180 towards EDBG.
  • Please note track 188! You have to route trains towards Duisburg Ruhrort Awanst (191) via track 188.

Abzw. Meiderich Süd (EDME)

Abzw. Meiderich Süd

Abzweig Meiderich Süd is lcoated directly next to Abzweig Meiderich Ost. Here we have a switch connection (191) with line 2274, leading into the direction of Ruhrort Hafen. Here we set a partial route, the other part is controlled by the dispatcher Ohf of Oberhausen Hbf. This connection can be used into both directions. Keep in mind that trains from EMAF or EOBR always have to be route via track 188 to get to this switch. Trains are offered to dispatcher Du Ru.

  • Trains towards Ruhrort Hafen (191) must be offered to Du Ru by telephone.
  • Auto fleeting only available at signal 189 towards EMAF.

Bahnhof Duisburg Beeck (EDBG)

Bahnhof Duisburg Beeck

The line 2331 continues towards Duisburg Beeck. The PSB Bf is located there, which is remotely controlled by us. There isn't much happening in this freight station nowadays. It is more a location where trains can pass each other, before the track continues single track towards Moers. One of tracks over the Haus-Knipp-Brücke, crossing the river Rhine, has been been removed recently. The block direction of this single track section needs to be set into the right direction before you can set a train route over it.

  • Block direction on the single track. Direction can be changed by using the EaGT button.
  • Auto fleeting available for signals F984 und ASig N987 only.
  • Remotely controlled dispatching area of PSB Bf.
  • Track 989 is the same as track 189, 984 is the same one as 184.

Überleitstelle Baerl (KDB)

Üst Baerl

After the single track over the Haus-Knipp-Brücke we have the Üst Baerl, from where the line continues as a double track line again. The short code of Üst Baerl begins with a 'K' (Köln) as this bridge is located on the regional border. Normally you do not offer trains heading for Moers.

  • Block direction on the single track. Direction can be changed by using the EaGT button.
  • No auto fleeting available for any signals.
  • Offering trains is normally not required.
  • Remotely controlled dispatching area of PSB Bf.

Some Tips from the Expert

Trains, which do not run into the single track lines whilst auto fleeting at the signals is enable, should be offered and accepted first before setting the route manually! Offering a train is done by telephone call or with the ZNP801 system.

In case the Auto fleeting light near a signal is flashing and a train route is not set, deactivate the auto fleeting by pressing the signal button together with the SBRT button. Then press the signal button again, followed by the SBET button. The train route should now be set if all conditions for doing is are available. In that case you will not have to set the train routes manually.

In case two trains, running from the right to the left with steering number "9", are directly behind each other consider sending the first from signal 665 towards track 697 (toward 696), and sending the second one over the passenger tracks by offering it on A653. The first train will then follow its normal route, the second one will be diverted via the Passenger tracks ("exit" track 652). This will ensure that the tracks are cleared faster in case more trains are following.

Trains with exceptional loads (known as Lü-trains) require special attention. It can be an advantage to re-route such trains with exceptional loads (Lü) within the dispatching are of Mathilde. For example: a train with exceptional loads is coming out of the direction of Duisburg Hochfeld Süd (031). There may not be any other Lü traffic on the adjacent tracks then. We might run into big problems when another Lü-train is on its way out of the other direction. In this case, send the first train to 005 instead of 035. In this case the other train can go via track 034.

A Lü-train always has steering number "0" assigned. This means that the auto fleeting system won't work for those trains, and that you have to set any part of the route yourself.

Finally one more tip: Try to stay calm! Even when the train drivers keep calling frequently telling you that are waiting in front of a signal at danger. So what? You decide which train can drive, and which one has to wait. And don't be afraid, there are no passenger on board the trains. So you can coordinate and dispatch in the most optimal way!

Steering numers for trains entering the panel are set by the neighbouring dispatchers. The steering numbers are normally handled automatically, but it is the dispatcher's responsibility to detect and correct any errors as compared with the timetable.

Note the numbered white field on the panel. Those are reminders with respect to the steering numbers.
